The bridge will not only cut down the travel time between Zhuhai and Hong Kong, it will also dramatically expand the potential catchment areas of PRD airports. While there are major airports on the west bank of the Pearl River Delta, during 2017 Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) handled around 4.9 million tonnes of freight, Guangzhou's Baiyun International Airport (CAN), handled 1.6 million tonnes, and Macau Airport (MFM) handled only 37,499 tonnes. However ahead of the bridge opening, related industries have been preparing for the new dynamic. Qatar Airways Cargo have already launched a twice-weekly trans-Pacific Boeing 777 freighter ex Macau (MFM) which went live from the start of October.
Eugene Chui, ConneXion's Hong Kong Branch Manager commented "The connectivity brought about by the HZMB looks set to benefit various sectors in Hong Kong, such as tourism, finance and commerce. In particular, it will enhance Hong Kong's position as a regional trade and logistics hub and also can better make use of the airport and container port in Hong Kong. Hong Kong stand to gain in this proces and we are ready!".
